Why You Should Run for Council

Hi everyone!! My name is Eve Smith, and I want to thank you so much for giving our blog a read! I am a Freshman studying Actuarial Science, and I am the current Vice President of Finance for the Theta Nu Chapter of Kappa Delta at Purdue. So, this basically means that I am in charge of billing for all of our members, making the budget (with the help of some of my incredible sisters), writing checks and loading credit cards to pay for our events and other houses’ philanthropies, and so much more! This may not sound like much fun, but, with the exception of having to remind members to pay, I absolutely love it. I promise that I am not as lame as I sound. :)

I know what you are thinking—they put a FRESHMAN in charge of the finances of the chapter. Trust me, though, I was just as surprised as you are. However, I feel as though the trust and acceptance I received as I took on this ~spooky~ new position is indicative of the special girls that make up our house.

I will never forget the moment I saw that I was the new VP-Finance. I had gone home for the weekend because, let’s be real, first-semester Freshman year was a DISASTER to say the least, and I was an emotional wreck. Nonetheless, I woke up at noon on Sunday afternoon to a text from my wonderful Big, Martha, reading “OMG YESS EVE CONGRATS IM SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!” It won’t come as a big surprise to people that know me that I had absolutely no clue what I was being congratulated for. It wasn’t until after I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and ate brunch, that it occurred to me that I had interviewed for council. But then I thought about it—surely they didn’t pick me, an oblivious Freshman, for a position, right? WRONG. I was the house’s new VP-Finance, and I was PANICKING. Though it seems completely irrational, if I had thought I was going to get the position, there is no way I would have ever run. To be completely honest, I was applying for the house points. However, with the help of my parents’, Big’s, and several other sisters’ comfort, I took on the new role. After a few weeks of screwing (what seemed like) everything up, I can confidently say that I have never made a better decision than running for council (even if I had done it for the wrong reasons).

Anyway, if you are currently at Purdue or plan to come here (Boiler Up), you can catch me trekking across campus with my green folder full of check paper and receipts—it has become a staple accessory. And if you have any questions about me, my position, or about the Panhellenic community in general, I would love to answer your questions. If you are considering going through recruitment, DO IT. Being a part of this house has brought me some of my closest friends and has pushed me in so many ways that I could have never dreamed. It truly is my home away from home. And one last thing—if you are in a chapter/join a chapter and are thinking about running for council, calm your nerves and go for it. It is an opportunity and experience like no other. :)
