Being a Kappa Delta Legacy

Hi everyone! My name is Martha and I’m from a western suburb right outside Chicago called Elmhurst. I’m a sophomore triple majoring in marketing, web programming and design, and building information modeling with a minor in communications.

I joined Kappa Delta as a freshman and served as multiple appointed officer positions including the apparel committee, standards board, recruitment committee, and even ran the Tumblr for a hot second. This year I have the opportunity to live in the house and since last September, I have had the honor of serving as Vice President-Standards. As you can imagine I am pretty busy most of the time, but I love every second of it.

Something unique about me is that I am a Kappa Delta legacy. My mom was in the Beta Theta chapter at Penn State. I grew up hearing stories from her about her time as KD in college, her best friend from Kappa Delta is even someone I have called “aunt” my whole life. But I never really thought anything of greek life it until it was my turn to go to college.

The only thing I had heard about Greek life is the slight glimpses my mom had told me, so when I came to college, I did not know what to expect about sorority life. However, after two weeks of recruitment, I found myself in KD. Not only did I personally love this house, but my mom and I created an even more special bond now that we were both Kappa Deltas.

When my mom and her best friend, my “aunt”, come to visit, they love to reminisce about all the times they had in KD and look at what has changed over the years. We love to compare stories and see how KD has changed but also has the same groundwork from when my mom was in college. I love seeing how their bond is still so strong after all these years and knowing that my kids will one day call my best friends in the house “aunt.” I can see myself remaining friends with girls in our chapter for life and being women my children can look up to.

This connection I have with my mom makes being in Kappa Delta even more special to me and has allowed me to grow to love our chapter even more.
